🔴 A SHORT FILM ABOUT LOVE
1988 | by Krzysztof Kieślowski
🔴 Tomek (O. Lubaszenko), a young boy, a foster child of an orphanage, rents a room in a block of flats and works at the post office. He is fascinated by a thirty-year-old woman who lives next door. Tomek observes Magda (G.Szapolowska) from the window of his room, he finds various ways to contact with her: he delivers milk, gives false advice notes. The woman is independent, free, she dates with another man. The boy thinks he is in love. He observes meetings with her lover. Irritated, Magda decides to give him a bitter lesson: she arranges a contact with the man in front of the window, and she offers the boy a purely physical form of contact.
🔴 She does not expect that Tomek's hypersensitivity will also change her heart. The theatrical version of the 6th part of the Dekalog TV series, devoted to the following commandment: ‘Thou shall not commit adultery!’. Just like other parts of this series, the interpretation of the film can be ambiguous, because neither the protagonist nor the heroine are cynical intruders, adulterers or victims of love. Separated by a block of flats and connected by a gaze, each of them seems to be lonely in a different way.
🔴 The film won the Golden and Silver Lions at the Gdynia Film Festival. Grazyna Szapolowska was also awarded for the best female role and Witold Adamek won the award for the best photography. Just like The Short Film About Killing, this film also received foreign awards: the award of the Jury of FIPRESCI and OCIC in San Sebastian (1988), and at the Geneva and Sao Paulo festivals (1989).
