Ми раді запросити вас на нову зустріч книжкового клубу “З Маланчуком за кавою”!Цього разу говоритимемо про роман "Кассандра курить папіроси" разом з його авторкою, Анною Безпалою, яка завітає до нас в Дім, щоби поспілкуватися на теми історичної памʼяті, тривоги, жіночих голосів та того, як минуле вперто римується з нашим сьогоденням.
Розмова відбудеться українською мовою, однак Анна радо поспілкується про свій роман також і англійською, якщо на подію хочуть завітати іноземні гості.
“Кассандра курить папіроси” — це атмосферний історичний роман, дія якого відбувається в Києві січня 1918 року — місті на межі змін і катастроф. У центрі історії знаходиться Наталя, молода жінка, яка намагається зберегти себе у місті, що розривається між революцією, війною та хаосом. Її голос переплітається з міфом про Кассандру — жінку, приречену бачити те, чого інші не хочуть визнавати.
Поступово минуле стає дзеркалом сьогодення, а роман ставить перед нами запитання:
- Що відбувається, коли історія повторюється?
- І що ми робимо з правдою, від якої хочеться відвернутися?
Анна Безпала — письменниця, культурна дипломатка, колишня стажерка Українського дому та засновниця нашого книжкового клубу “З Маланчуком за кавою”. Її книгу можна взяти у нашій бібліотеці.

We are delighted to invite you to the next meeting of our book club “Coffee with Malanchuk”!
This time we’ll be discussing the novel “Кассандра курить папіроси” (“Cassandra Smokes Cigarettes”) together with its author, Anna Bezpala, who will join us at the House to talk about historical memory, anxiety, women’s voices, and how the past insistently echoes our present.
The talk will be held in Ukrainian as the book is yet to be translated into English. However, Anna will be happy to accommodate the discussion with anyone who speaks English.
“Cassandra Smokes Cigarettes” is an atmospheric historical novel set in Kyiv in January 1918 — a city on the edge of change and catastrophe. At the center of the story is Nataliia, a young woman trying to hold on to herself in a city torn between revolution, war, and chaos. Her voice intertwines with the myth of Cassandra — a woman doomed to see what others refuse to acknowledge.
Gradually, the past becomes a mirror of today, and the novel poses questions we can’t easily ignore:
- What happens when history repeats itself?
- And what do we do with a truth we’d rather turn away from?
Anna Bezpala is a writer, cultural diplomat, Ukraine House’s former intern, and the founder of our book club “Coffee with Malanchuk.” Her book can be borrowed from our library at Ukraine House in Denmark.
