Šumski are a band from Zagreb, Croatia founded in 1991 and playing music with influences of kraut rock, world music, psychedelia, new wave, animation soundtracks, noise, avant-pop etc.Šumski is one of the most well-known alternative bands in Croatia. Founded in Zagreb in 1991, from the very start they were noted to be one of the most unusual acts appearing on the scene. With their performance and inspiration falling well outside of the popular genre brackets of the day, Šumski created their own musical landscape, full of experiments and unexpected arrangements, within which kraut rock, world music, psychedelia, new wave, animation soundtracks, noise, avant-pop and electronics all take up their place equally. Their ‘sound without borders’ is akin to Can, Faust, Blurt, Captain Beefheart but also the movies of Jacques Tati and the books of Blaise Cendrars.
Besides playing in Šumski, all the band members also form part of the Zagreb scene in other ways, through playing in other bands (Peach Pit, Cul-de-Sac, Haustor, Jinx, Stampedo, Zli bubnjari, Brujači/Buzzers, Uzrujan, Franz Kafka Ensemble) and the bassist Kornel manages the cult club Močvara and runs the label Kekere Aquarium.
Šumski had a number of interesting collaborations. Ted Milton from the UK pogo jazz noir band Blurt played the saxophone on their album Ostrvo ledenog kita. Their latest release had guests like Dan Kinzelman, the American saxophonist living in Italy, and Giuseppe Ianpieri, an Italian metalhead inclined to classical music who played the harpsichord. Šumski's members played with Damo Suzuki, Can's vocalist, a couple of times and the band was included in the compilation Damo Suzuki – Inside Network. The main role in the video for their song Pravi izlaz was played by Zlatko Burić Kićo, Danish-Croatian actor, best known for his performances in the Pusher film trilogy and the films 2012 and Triangle of Sadness, for which he won a European Film Award and a Guldbagge Award.
In 2022, Šumski composed the score for the short animated film for children Letters from the Edge of the Forest (Jelena Oroz).
Apart from Croatia, they also performed in Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Hungary, Netherlands, Czeck Republic, Belgium, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Switzerland, Danmark, Germany and Great Britain. Šumski released six albums, with Trottel Records, Zvuk Močvare, Pop depresija and Geenger Records releasing their last album, Kolobari, in 2022, which was co-funded through a crowdfunding campaign.
„Sounds like it would get people from a bunch of different music backgrounds to dance together.“
