Rarely does a band name so precisely indicate the music released under its moniker. In 1922, Paul Klee created his painting of the same name: On a horizontal bar equipped with a crank sit four individual birds. With their beaks wide open and necks stretched, they look in different directions. The freedom of song meets the discipline of mechanics. The "Zwitschermaschine" (Twittering Machine) of alto saxophonist Mark Weschenfelder unites four wind instruments driven by a rhythm section. The music is as original as the painting. In a beautifully unorthodox manner, the band's sound is defined by two flutes, which shimmer, sparkle, and twitter alongside, with, or in front of the saxophone, trombone, guitar, bass, and drums. Weschenfelder's compositions are immensely agile. Copying American role models is as far from his mind as creating simple launch pads for improvisational self-expression. He loves it compact, colorful, and fast-paced. Above all, he keeps the principle of improvisation vital, without settling into the comfort of once-discovered patterns.
