Ta seminar je študija temeljev sodobne koreografije in ustvarjanja plesa. Osredotoča se na pogoje, ki jih ni mogoče zaobiti, na pravila, ki so vedno prisotna, na zgodovino, v odnosu do katere vedno delujemo, ter na to, kako lahko z umeščanjem uveljavljenih, nastajajočih in osebnih praks inoviramo in omogočamo izjeme. Temelji, orodja in definicije se lahko doživljajo kot ovire, kot temen gozd, ki vdira v naš umetniški izraz. Razumevanje določitev pa ne pomeni nujno podrejanja, temveč lahko prav tako omogoča izhode in pobeg. Navsezadnje nam vpogled v aparat koreografije omogoča tudi vpogled v skrivnostna področja intuicije in ustvarjalnega naključja.
Srečanje želi ponuditi pregled ključnih vprašanj, ki zaposlujejo sodobni ples in koreografijo, poskuša zaznati pomembne zgodovinske trenutke, slediti izvorom konvencij, razkriti narative, povezane z neprosojno terminologijo, ter ustvariti preglednost glede uveljavljenih orodij in strategij, pri čemer vztraja, da sta obvladovanje definicij in prepoznavanje sivih con sredstva za osvobajanje estetskih praks.
V nasprotju s Spångbergovimi improviziranimi predavanji je ta seminar strukturiran v 16 poglavij, od katerih vsako obravnava ločeno vprašanje. Brez uporabe primerov bodo nejasna terminologija, samooklicani koncepti in svet zožujoče konvencije podvrženi natančnemu, neposrednemu in temeljitemu razčlenjevanju do najmanjših enot.
Delavnica – ali morda seminar ali salon – je namenjena koreografom, dramaturgom in piscem, vendar je dobrodošel vsakdo. Gre za »odprto knjigo«, s katero preživimo čas, namesto da bi ji postavljali vprašanja; za izkušnjo poslušanja, iz katere vsak posameznik vzame, kar želi. Morda celo za začasni javni prostor, skozi katerega lahko vznikne inteligenca.
Program seminarja:
Uvod. Od »kaj« k »kako« in nazaj. Od esence k drami, od pogajanja k eleganci.
1. Kaj je koreografija? Struktura, strategija, taktika.
2. Kaj pomeni »performativno«? Subjekt, izvedba, forma.
3. Od kriterijev k performativnosti. Pojem kandidature, pomen moči.
4. Koreografija in epistemologija? Kaj je dispozitiv?
5. Koreografija kot razširjena praksa? Vulgarizacija, koreografsko, raziskava kot utemeljitev.
6. Koreografija: jezik, materialnost, umik.
7. Kaj je produkcija znanja? Znanje, kultura, izkušnja, agencija.
8. Od poetike k estetiki. Identiteta in anonimnost – narava/kultura in emergenca – interpretacija in produkcija – možnost in potencialnost.
9. Postajanje ni transformacija. Spinoza, prepričanje, praznina, estetska izkušnja.
10. Neposrednost, performans izraza. Mesto imaginacije.
11. Koncept ni predlog? Mehki stroji, nedoločenost, aplikacije.
12. Eksperimentalno? Pojavnost, inteligenca, etika, rezultat.
13. Avtorstvo in lastnina v poznem kapitalizmu. Položaj odgovornosti.
14. Easy Rider: improvizacija, emancipacija in pluralnost svobode.
15. Portret umetnika kot strahopetca.
16. Od poti k pokrajini. Undercommons in fantazma javnega prostora.

Mårten Spångberg je švedski koreograf, ki dela in živi v Berlinu. Zanimajo ga strukturne specifike koreografije; njegovo delo je interdisciplinarno in sega od plesa in pisanja do vizualnih medijev, zlasti slikarstva.
Čeprav ga zanima estetska izkušnja, se njegovo raziskovanje osredotoča na to, kako umetnost naslavlja ekologijo, zlasti na prag med telesom in znanjem, zaznavo in vrednostjo, identiteto in aktivnimi oblikami anonimnosti. Tematsko njegovo delo obravnava ekologijo v razširjenem smislu, sooča se s korelacijo zahodne estetike z ekstraktivističnim kapitalizmom ter hkrati zagovarja kritiko nenehne kulturnizacije umetnosti. Je zavzet kulturni kritik in avtor več knjig.

Recently the choreographer William Forsythe proposed, “you need the foundation in order to innovate”.
This seminar is a study into the foundations of contemporary choreography and dance making. It’s a zooming in on the conditions that cannot be circumvented, the rules that are never not there, the historical we cannot not practice in relation to, and how we can, through situating established, emerging, and personal practices innovate and enable exceptions. Foundation, tools and definitions can be experienced as obstacles, as a dark forest intruding on our artistic output. Understanding determination, however, does not necessarily imply to abide but can equally enable escape routes. After all, insight into the apparatus of choreography, will also give insight into the secretive realms of intuition and creative coincidence.
This gathering aims at offering an overview of significant concerns occupying contemporary dance and choreography, attempting to detect key historical moments, trace the roots of conventions, unveil narratives surrounding opaque terminology and generate transparency regarding established tools and strategies, insisting on that mastering definitions and locating grey zones are means to set aesthetic practices free.
Contrary to Spångberg’s improvised lectures this seminar is structured around 16 chapters, each approaching a distinct concern. Without using examples, fuzzy terminology, entitled concepts, and world-shrinking conventions will be given a hard stare, eyeballed and dissected to the smallest entity.
The workshop, or perhaps it’s a seminar or salon, is directed towards choreographers, dramaturgs and writers, but everybody is welcome. It’s an open book that one spends time with rather than asks questions to, a listening experience from which each individual takes with them what they please. Perhaps, even elaborating a temporary public space through which intelligence can arise.

Introduction. From what to how and back again. From essence to drama, from negotiation to elegance.
1. What is choreography? Structure, strategy, tactic.
2. What do you mean performative? Subject, performance, form.
3. From criteria to performativity. The notion of candidature, the import of power.
4. Choreography and epistemology? What is a dispositive?
5. Choreography as expanded practice? Vulgarisation, the choreographic, research as justification.
6. Choreography: language, materiality, withdrawal.
7. What is knowledge production? Knowledge, culture, experience, agency.
8. From poetics to aesthetics. Identity and anonymity - nature/culture and emergence - interpretation and production - possibility and potentiality.
9. Becoming isn’t transformation. Spinoza, conviction, emptiness, aesthetic experience.
10. Immediacy, the performance of expression. The place of imagination.
11. A concept is not a proposal? Soft machines, indeterminacy, applications.
12. Experimental? Appearance, intelligence, ethics, outcome.
13. Authorship and property in late capitalism. The position of accountability.
14. Easy Rider: Improvisation, emancipation and the plurality of freedom.
15. Portrait of the artist as a coward.
16. From path to landscape. The undercommons and the phantasm of public space.

Mårten Spångberg is a Swedish choreographer working and living Berlin. With an interest in the structural specificities of choreography his work is interdisciplinary spanning from dance and writing to visual media, in particular painting.
While concerned with aesthetic experience his research focuses on how art addresses ecology, in particular the threshold between the body and knowledge, sensation and value, identity and active forms of anonymity. Thematically his work address ecology in an expended sense confronting Western aesthetics’ correlation with extractivist capitalism and simultaneously arguing against the ongoing culturalization of art. He is a diligent cultural critic and has published several books.
