About this Event
A training course to help you improve your skills and confidence in face to face youth work<h4>The course will help participants develop their understanding and practice in:</h4>
  • Engaging and Communicating with Young People
  • Group Work within a Youth Work Setting
  • Reflective Practice in a Youth Work Setting
  • Safeguarding in a Youth Work Setting
  • Theory of Youth Work
  • Work-based Practice in Youth Work
  • Working with Behaviour that Challenges in a Youth Work Setting
  • Young People's Development

Additional optional units to be agreed as the course progresses to compete the qualification for an 'Open Awards Level 3 Certificate in Youth Work Practice'. For those who wish, you will have the opportunity to undertake further additional units to gain an 'Open Awards Level 3 Diploma in Youth Work Practice'.

You will receive notification of a date for discussion by 28th April. Discussions with all those who apply will take place between 1st and 9th May 2024. There are up to 20 places available on the course.

The course starts on 13th May and will be delivered over 22 core, weekly, 3 hour Monday evening sessions; between 6 and 16 additional sessions on units to be chosen; plus a mandatory residential experience. The dates of the residential will be agreed with participants.

There will also be at least 3 additional tutorial support workshop sessions to get assistance with completing portfolios. We will also assist learners to set up their own action learning groups for peer support.

Participants will complete worksheets, exercises, placement reports, recordings, projects and other work to evidence their learning.

Participants should have good literacy skills, be able to work to A-level standard and commit to all Monday evening and any other sessions and the residential during the course.

The course is for anyone involved in youth work within an organisation on a part-time or volunteer basis.

For the Certificate, you should be able to evidence a minimum of 60 hours delivery in a fieldwork placement in a youth work environment (paid or unpaid) throughout your learning journey. This increases to 80 hours of fieldwork placement for the Diploma.

A payment of £85 is due prior to commencement of the course. This will be fully refunded on successful completion of the course.



Training will be led by:

Jonny Wineberg, Founder & Director, Community Futures Trust CIC. Jonny has worked at a senior management level in the public, private and voluntary sectors. He has been involved in youth work for over 40 years; was previously Deputy Principal Youth Officer at Manchester City Council; a trainer and lecturer in youth work and management for 30 years; and a consultant for over 200 not-for-profit organisations over the last 18 years.Jonny is also the part-time Director of Operations for We Stand Together and a trustee of several other charities.

Akemia Minott, who has a degree in Applied Youth and Community Work Studies and was a youth worker from 2005 at The Hideaway Youth Project. She has worked for One Manchester, Manchester Young Lives and set up 84YOUTH as a community integrated and youth-led CIC addressing violence amongst young people and resulting Perpetual Traumatic Stress Disorder. She has delivered in-house training in youth work, mentoring, training delivery and use of lived experience to inform practice using legislative theatre.

Amina Waldron, the Founder and CEO of Youth Elements CIC. She brings over 25 years of experience as a qualified JNC Youth and Community worker to the organisation she has led for 13 years. She has recently enhanced her extensive expertise by completing an MBA and is an accredited educator.

Verification will be undertaken by North Manchester Community Partnership who are a registered online centre for Open Awards.

Other trainers and practitioners will be invited to deliver sessions on the course.
