About this Event

The Solitude Lab conducts pioneering research into how solitude affects our emotions, thoughts, and internal experiences. The lab was founded with the aim of uncovering the true nature of solitude and challenging the social stigma associated with being alone. The team invites people into the lab to sit alone while engaging in various activities, from contemplating quietly to solving puzzles and browsing on social media. Currently, the lab combines self-reports with behavioural observation and physiological measures to thoroughly understand people's experiences in solitude. Through studies, the team has identified a few benefits of solitude, including its ability to calm, rejuvenate, and promote self-reflection. When engaged proactively, solitude offers a valuable space for rest and relaxation, distinct from feelings of loneliness or isolation. However, solitude can also present challenges, such as moments of dullness or discomfort. The way we approach and spend our alone time significantly influences these experiences.
