We're out in the salt ponds on the Don Edwards National Wildlife Refuge looking for waterbirds thriving under the California sun!
About this Event

Join the Young Birders Club to find summer shorebirds at Don Edwards National Wildlife Refuge! Visiting Ravenswood Salt Pond SF2, we’ll observe the Forster’s Terns, Caspian Terns, California Gulls, and possible Black Skimmers that breed here. These salt marshes are also great spots to look for resident waterfowl including Willets, Marbled Godwits, Black-bellied Plover, and more.

This trip is designed for young birders, though parents and siblings are welcome to attend! We welcome birders of all skill levels. Loaner binoculars are available for participants.

Leaders: Howard Friedman, Mike Ambrose, and Sonja Kramer

Meet: In the parking area near the entrance of the Pond SF2 trail. Use Google Maps (not Apple Maps) to map to the Dumbarton Bridge Vista Point and Trail.

Latitude/Longitude: 37.498194, -122.129211.

Parking: Free parking. The parking area is on the frontage road along the side of the beginning of the Dumbarton Bridge (west end of Dumbarton Bridge, south of the bridge).

Directions: From Hwy 101 north take the Willow Road Exit and go east. Make a right turn on Hwy 84/Bayfront Expressway (multiple lanes turn right). Drive approximately 2 miles on Bayfront Expressway just before the bridge. Take the Ravenswood Unit Exit to the right, which leads to a parking lot along the bridge’s south side. It is the last exit before going onto the bridge.

From 880 take the Decoto Rd. exit and make a left turn onto Hwy. 84. This is a toll road. Drive 7.5 miles to the exit on the right where the PG&E Substation is on the west side of the bridge. Drive back in an east direction and follow the road under the bridge to the parking lot by the trail entrance.

Trip Difficulty: 1-3 miles, flat dirt trails

Facilities: One porta potty toilet at the beginning of the trail
