Yoga Coach Training

How can you coach your clients (and yourself) to practice yoga safely and wisely on and off the mat? In the YogaMedCo Yoga Coach Training led by global yoga coaching pioneer Dr. Suzie Carmack, you will learn the art and science of integrating somatic movement- and talk-based coaching into your work with one-on-one clients -- to support them in achieving their health, wellness and well-being goals.

This interactive and inspiring 2-day online training workshop brings Dr. Carmack's globally acclaimed Yoga for One 6-step coaching framework to life, as well as her traffic light method for modifying 30 yoga poses (with the chair, blocks and mat) for coaches and their clients.

Who is This Training For?

We welcome coaches, educators, yoga teachers, fitness trainers, yoga therapists, and other allied health professionals who want to learn how they can integrate yoga philosophy and practices into their work using the inclusive and evidence-informed Yoga for One 6-step method (Carmack, 2024). We also welcome anyone who is curious about the process of yoga coaching, for their self-empowerment: stress regulation, self-compassion, and self-leadership!

Learning Outcomes - What You Will Know After the Training

By the end of the training you'll know how to support your clients in practicing embodied (somatic) self- awareness, self-compassion, self-care and self-leadership through the power of yoga coaching using the 6-step Yoga for One Method (Carmack, 2024). And, you'll learn how you can apply Dr. Carmack's Yoga for One Traffic Light Method in the modification of 40 yoga postures, to support clients (and the coach) in practicing yoga safely - while honoring medicla guidance and the client's intuition - with a chair (red zone), blocks (yellow zone) and mat (green zone).

Learning Objectives - What You Will Be Able to Do After the Training

  • Understand how to incorporate chair yoga and mindfulness into the coach's daily workflow to support the coach's self-regulation to prepare for the session.
  • Understand the 6 principles of compassionate leadership, and how to apply these in professional and personal contexts within the coaching scope of practice
  • Understand the principles of DEIAB (diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility and belonging) and how to ensure they are applied in the coaching process
  • Apply the embodiment (somatic) practices of breathwork, movement and mindfulness in coaching conversations, to support clients' ability to engage more fully in the coaching process, and promote the client's ability to engage in big-picture (visioning) and creative thoughtwork.
  • Analyze the client's state of centering (balance or imbalance) in their work/life well-being and koshas (layers of self), to be able to appropriately support the client with yoga philosophy framework and practice education, within the yoga coach's scope of practice.
  • Co-Create a client program for whole health and well-being, using the Yoga for One 6-step logic model developed by Carmack (2024).

How Does This Program Align with the Standards of the Health Coaching Field?

This course s highly relevant for health and wellness coaches seeking to further their understanding of the four content areas of the National Board for Health and Wellness Coaching board certification exam:

1. Coaching Structure: The course provides a structured approach to integrating chair yoga and mindfulness into the coach's daily workflow, ensuring each coach has tools for self-regulation, so that they can prepare mentally, energetically, physically, and emotionally for each coaching session. This aligns with the NBHWC's emphasis on effective session management.

2. Coaching Process: By teaching embodiment practices such as breathwork, mindfulness, and relaxation techniques for the coach and the client, the course enhances the coach's ability to build relationships, communicate effectively, and apply coaching techniques.

3. Health and Wellness: The course covers the application of yoga philosophy and holistic well-being principles, providing coaches with a deeper understanding of the ways that ancient yoga and Ayurvedic philosophy (from 5000+ years ago) was the original "lifestyle medicine." The course will explore how we can be inspired by these timeless truths, and still stay within our scope of practice to follow contemporary evidence-based and evidence-informed practice guidelines for coaching today. We will also learn theoretical concepts and frameworks, such as the illness-wellness continuum; the social determinants of health; and the Ayurvedic doshas as well as evaluation-based program design.

4. Ethics and Legal Considerations: Through experiential practices and coaching labs, the course emphasizes compassionate feedback and ethical coaching practices within the coach training experience. The YogaMedCo approach ensures coaches can experience and witness professional ethical conduct in keeping with the standards of the coaching profession and yoga philosophy.
