About this Event
Year 13 Science: Viticulture and Wine-making
Come join us for an exciting event focused on the world of viticulture and wine-making at Lincoln University. This in-person event will dive into the fascinating chemistry and biology behind grape growing, environmental management and wine production. Learn from industry experts, tour vineyards, and get hands-on experience in the winery. Whether you're a budding scientist or just have a passion for wine, this event is perfect for anyone interested in the intersection of science and viticulture. Don't miss out on this unique opportunity to explore the world of viticulture and wine-making!
Safety plan, parking instructions and event overview will be sent via email.
Includes fieldwork/activities in the vineyard (if weather is fine), lab work, a decision making game, and mini-lecture (Viticulture around the world and the effects of climate change in New Zealand). See agenda below and please note order of the activites can change depending on which of the 3 streams students are in.
Agenda
🕑: 10:00 AM - 10:10 AM
Arrive, walk to activity and toilet break (as required).
🕑: 10:10 AM - 10:50 AM
Wine-making lab: how wine is made & the lab tests involved in making good wine
Info: Tour our winery to learn about how wine is made, the different factors that winemakers can use to make good wine and then head into the lab to do some tests to see what the data says. Only 0% alcohol wine will be taste tested (and is optional).
🕑: 10:50 AM - 11:00 AM
Walk to activity and toilet break (as required).
🕑: 11:00 AM - 11:50 AM
The vineyard: scavenger hunt & manipulating environment for biological growth.
Info: Come explore the vineyard during harvest time when there are grapes on the vine. Student experience a scavenger hunt to explore often overlooked features and management of the vines and environment. It also integrates some of the economics and costs involved in wine production.
🕑: 11:50 AM - 12:30 PM
Lunch: on campus cafes (cashless - card only).
🕑: 12:30 PM - 01:00 PM
Mini lecture: Viticulture around the world & impact of climate change in NZ.
Info: Viticulture is an international business in terms of how it is produced and what consumers want. This is a brief overview of the different markets and growing areas, with a focus then on New Zealand and how climate change will impact our wine industry. Some impacts are not directly obvious like how the alcohol content of wines may increase. Different options for the future are introduced around how to help future proof and redesign our production systems and growing environments.
🕑: 01:00 PM - 01:10 PM
Walk to activity.
🕑: 01:10 PM - 01:50 PM
Careers & decision activity (using scientific reasoning for good management).
Info: Every vineyard, peoples management philosophy and wine-making decisions are different, which is why there are so many different types of wine. This activity when students are the decision makers and depending on their decisions they will either make a great wine... or a drinkable one.
🕑: 01:50 PM - 02:00 PM
