Laura Bergmann came from NJ to attend Shenandoah University as an Exercise Science and Dance major on Dance and Academic Scholarships. After retiring from the performing arts, she obtained a Master’s degree in Exercise Science and worked at both sports medicine facilities and gyms as a corrective exercise specialist, personal trainer, and a multisport coach. She is now finishing up her PhD in Human Health and Performance.
Although she was told from a young age that she would never be able to run or be a runner—and has experienced nearly every kind of pain in the process—she has successfully qualified for and completed five Boston Marathons, dozens of triathlons, duathlons, ultras, and world championships with Team USA. She has also earned the ranking of All-American triathlete and duathlete multiple times, including last year as a Master athlete.
She applies not only what she has learned in school but also on her own personal journey to help others find pain-free movement and joy in their favorite activities at her clinic in Winchester, VA, called Fascia Lines.
At Fascia Lines, the focus is on addressing the underlying causes of an issue rather than just managing symptoms. Prevention is a key priority—clients don’t have to be injured to seek care; they come to prevent injury. Life and sport involve repetitive movements that create imbalances, wear and tear, and stress on the joints. Keeping the body balanced and tissues healthy helps prevent abnormal joint deterioration and instability. Just like regular maintenance on a car prevents engine failure, proactive care for the body helps avoid major injuries.
Many people wait until they are in significant pain before seeking help, but early warning signs like “My elbow feels funny when I play pickleball,” “My knee feels off after I run,” or “My back hurts after practicing my guitar” indicate that something is wrong. These issues require a comprehensive approach to address them before they turn into full-blown injuries.
This proactive philosophy is not how the current medical system typically operates, which is why she is completing her PhD. The body cannot be treated or trained in isolated parts—it is an interconnected system. The fascial system, which integrates into every part of the body, has only recently been studied and is still widely misunderstood. As research advances, the way practitioners approach treatment and movement must evolve as well.
By earning her PhD, she aims to publish research that drives this change and to educate the next generation of healthcare practitioners at the university level. Healthy fascia is the key to longevity, and every treatment, training, and post surgical protocol should incorporate a fascial component. Women specific issues that arise from c-sections and mastectomies have yet to even be acknowledged or addressed. This neglect of women's health is at the core of her dissertation project: developing a fascial approach to breast cancer recovery.
