About this Event
Discover a powerful and often overlooked chapter of history that links Sussex to one of the defining conflicts of the 20th century.
In July 1936, a military uprising led by General Franco sparked the Spanish Civil War, a brutal conflict that became a prelude to the Second World War. As Spain descended into turmoil, people in Sussex were drawn into the struggle in remarkable and unexpected ways.
This compelling multi-media presentation brings the story to life through contemporary newsreels, photographs, rare cine footage, and personal accounts, alongside songs, both original and from the era, performed live by Robb Johnson and Jon Mason. This ensemble production brings to life a fascinating story combining local and international history.
Explore the stories behind:
- International Brigade volunteers from Sussex, the inspirational men and women who travelled to Spain to fight fascism.
- Franco’s British supporters, including the MI6 agent and Sussex farmer who smuggled General Franco fromn exile to lead the uprising against the elected Government.
- The “Niños” – Basque Children escaping Luftwaffe bombs, given sanctuary in Worthing.
- Local solidarity movements supporting the Spanish Republic in its fight against Franco's fascists.
- The Battle of the Ebro and the experiences of Sussex Brigaders Edmund Updale and James Jump.
Blending local history with global events, this immersive evening of film, music, and storytelling reveals how a distant war resonated close to home and why its legacy still matters today.
