Come dressed up as a golfer in vintage style, and celebrate the fashion and equipment of the hickory era!
About this Event

World Hickory Golf Day falls on the first Sunday in May and this year we are celebrating by hosting a fun session in our galleries for families. Hickory golf refers to the time from the late1890s - to early 1930s, with the use of wooden shafted clubs.

Come dressed in vintage clothing; so look out your plus-fours, tweed skirts and Fair Isle jumpers. If you don't have anything like this in your wardrobe, we have a small selection of kids' clothes in our dressing up area, which can be shared. Images below to help inspire your fashion choices. Adults are also encouraged to dress up!

There will be opportunities for crafts and putting throughout the day for all visitors and for attendees the planned activities are as follows:

  1. 10am - 10.30am - Learning & Access Curator will lead a handling session where you can look at equipment used.
  2. 10.30am - 11am - Talk from Kingarrock Golf Course about the history of their course at Hill of Tarvit. Kingarrock is the only remaining hickory golf course in the UK and was first established in 1924.
  3. 11am - 12noon - Putting and crafts time - Using cardboard, paper and craft materials we will make our our clubs and there will also be the option for designing your own golf outfit.

This event is free of charge and allows time in galleries, there will be refreshments available in the Learning Room. Suitable for kids 5+ and all children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. No previous golf experience required.

Please contact Learning & Access Curator Hannah Fleming [email protected] with any queries.
