Workshop Overview
Open to guests, this special in-person Ney Meşk Session at Yunus Emre Enstitüsü – London invites participants to experience the traditional meşk style of musical learning — an immersive practice built on listening, repetition, and collective performance.
Led by Murat Ferhat Yegül, this three-hour session offers both beginners and experienced players a chance to explore the timeless sound of the Ney, one of the most symbolic instruments in Ottoman and Turkish Sufi music.
Through group exercises focused on breath, tone, and simple melodic phrasing, participants will connect with the Ney’s meditative depth — a sound long associated with the Sufi pursuit of hiçlik (nothingness).
Authentic reed (kane) Neys — not plastic ones — will be used throughout the workshop. Those who wish to purchase their own instrument will have the opportunity to buy a high-quality Ney starting from £20.
This meşk-style workshop also offers an excellent starting point for those interested in joining our online Ney course beginning in January 2026, as participants will have the unique opportunity to take their first session face-to-face before continuing their musical journey online.
For any questions about Neys , participants are welcome to contact the instructor, Murat Ferhat Yegül, directly via Instagram DM
Engage with Turkish musical heritage in a vibrant, communal, and contemplative setting — and let the breath of the Ney guide you into the spirit of hiçlik.
About the Exhibition
Hiç: In Pursuit of Nothingness explores the Sufi concept of “hiç” — meaning nothingness — through calligraphy, illumination, and ceramic art.
Curated by Nagihan Seymour, the exhibition offers a contemplative journey bridging traditional Turkish art and contemporary expression.
Rooted in the philosophy of transcending the self to achieve harmony with the whole, hiç invites visitors to reflect on mindfulness, ego, and existence in the modern world.
Alongside the display, visitors can join workshops, talks, and guided tours for a deeper engagement with the spirit of the exhibition.
