Learn the ancient art of egg tempera painting! This historic egg tempera technique, a precursor to oil painting, became popular during the early Renaissance.In this two-day workshop, participants will make all-natural paints from scratch, create a painting on wood, and finish their work with metallic leaf. Open to art enthusiasts of all levels. No painting experience required. All materials provided.

Day 1: Participants transfer their drawings for their individual projects with the spolvero technique to wood boards. Reference photos will be provided, but participants have the option to invent their own. They will also create the traditional egg tempera paint from scratch for their monochromatic underpainting. After the underpainting, we proceed with the coloured layers.
Day 2: participants finish the coloured layers of their artworks and have the option to apply metallic leaf details to their piece.
Egg tempera is water based and dries very quickly so participants will be able to take their work home.
About the instructor: Letizia Dotto is a multi-disciplinary artist from Vancouver. A former professional dancer with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Letizia moved to Florence, Italy in 2020 to pursue her passion for visual arts, studying painting, drawing and sculpture, at the Accademia D’Arte.
Letizia’s work explores transposing connection and emotion in human relationships. Her portraits, figurative art and performances move past the superficiality of the body to emphasize how it can act as a conduit for our inner worlds. Through her work, she highlights the sensitive, intuitive and nurturing qualities of women and feminine strength.
Letizia currently works and resides between Sicily and Vancouver, conducting workshops and lessons and pursuing her research in various dance styles, movement techniques, and performance art. She has participated in local exhibitions within Italy and abroad in both the mediums of painting and performance.
