About this Event
Workshop on Software Sustainability
According to some estimates, information technology is one of the largest single global producers of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and is predicted to consume over 20% of global energy by 2030. Software is a major factor in ICT energy use, especially in application areas such as machine learning, data centres, and blockchain and cryptocurrency processing.
This workshop aims to bring together academics and industrial partners working on the different facets of making software more environmentally sustainable with the ultimate goal of facilitating grant proposal development. From optimising code, to scheduling tasks on servers running with renewable energy, to adopting feedback visualisations of their energy consumption, there are multiple technical and social layers on which specialists can reduce their environmental impact. The workshop will feature talks from external and internal speakers to give overviews of such grand challenges and opportunities followed by a structured activity for collaborative ideation.
