Working with Young People with Complex Needs - 2 days

This 2 day workshop is suitable for clinicians working with young people (<25 years) who are experiencing complex mental health challenges. Utilising a relational framework, this training will focus on the development of personality and the fundamental influences of attachment, specific mental health co-occuring difficulties, identifying and managing risk, working within systems of care, use of the therapeutic relationship, and continuous reflective practice.

Learning Objectives:

On completion of this workshop participants will be able to:

• Recognise the developmental pathway of borderline personality disorder (BPD), its diagnostic criteria and its formulation.
• Explain the role of attachment and trauma in the development of complex mental health in young people and how attachment theory can inform working therapeutically with young people, caregivers, systems and in reflective practice.
• Identify how to apply general management principles for complexities co-existing with BPD.
• Formulate an individual’s risk behaviours using Spectrum’s Risk Matrix to aid risk prediction and intervention.
• Recognise disintegration of the system and use the resources presented to feel empowered to work to integrate the system.
• Recognise the challenges families and networks experience and how to work with young people who resist family inclusion or may not have family involvement.
• Use the common factors approach to build and maintain a strong and effective therapeutic relationship.
• Understand how working with BPD can impact clinicians professionally and personally, and how to respond effectively.

Prerequisite: We recommend previous experience or training in working with young people with BPD, e.g. BPD Core Competency Workshop or Foundation Training for Working with people with BPD delivered by Spectrum.

Who should attend: Mental health clinicians and other professionals working with young people with personality disorders and complex trauma.

Presenters:

Katrina Bull is a Senior Clinical Psychologist and trainer at Spectrum with the DBT and workforce teams. She is a certified DBT therapist with the DBT-Linehan Board of Certification and has completed advanced training in the DBT Prolonged Exposure Protocol for PTSD. Katrina has over 15 years’ experience in public and private youth and adult mental health services in Australia and the UK, specialising in treatments for BPD, PTSD, Complex PTSD and brief suicide intervention.

Dr Samantha Tabak is a senior clinical psychologist and board-accredited supervisor. She has over a decade of experience working in Child and Youth Mental Health services, psychiatric triage, intensive outreach teams, and early psychosis, utilizing psychotherapy frameworks such as MBT, DBT, ACT, and Open Dialogue-informed therapy, and is currently part of the Complex Care Service at Spectrum. She also works with young people and their families in private practice. Samantha believes in a person-centred and collaborative approach to treatment and support.
