Germany’s performing arts world can be confusing at first sight - What’s the difference between Freie Szene – the independent performing arts community - and the Stadt- und Staatstheater – the repertory and ensemble theaters? What are the characteristics of both work environments? And how can artists, producers and other cultural professionals gain a foothold in one or both? Our one-day workshop and networking event is here to help! It is intended for transnational artists who are looking for orientation in Germany’s performing art community - no matter whether you have just arrived or have been here for a while and are still looking for greater understanding of how everything works.
NEWCOMER Performing Arts Professionals:
For artists who have recently arrived in Germany, it can be challenging to find your footing. It’s not always evident which work field fits your artistic practice - the Freie Szene, the independent performing arts community, or the Stadt- und Staatstheater, the ensemble and repertory theaters. Or might even a mix of both worlds be best for you? Possibly!
In the morning session, Aurora Kellermann and Christiane Kretschmer (the Berlin Performing Arts Program) will take a closer look at the Freie Szene: How does it work? What makes it independent? What does it have to offer? And are there specific opportunities for transnational artists arriving in Berlin? (Spoiler alert: Yes, there are!)
How is the funding system structured, how do you apply? What are the necessary steps to take and who are the partners you need? What venues are suitable for newcomers' projects? What are the bureaucratic basics you need to know and how do you navigate the responsibilities that come with freelancing? And most importantly - is there a way to make a living within this system?
In the afternoon session, the colleagues from ensemble network will explore the Stadt- und Staatstheater landscape: How can you access it? How do you build your network, and understand its working conditions and everyday routines. We’ll also look at the opportunities that exist beyond Berlin and how you might connect with theaters across Germany.
DEVELOPING Performing Arts Professionals:
Transnational artists who have been in Germany for a certain period of time often find it challenging to build sustainable connections and establish their work. How do you create long-term networks? What opportunities do exist for them? How do you find support for ongoing bureaucratic challenges? How do you find effective ways of working.
In the morning session, the colleagues from ensemble network will focus on the Stadt- und Staatstheater system: What can you do to secure long-term collaborations? How can you grow and strengthen your professional network within these structures?
In the afternoon session, Laia Montoya and Christin Eckart (the Berlin Performing Arts Program) will turn to the Freie Szene and explore how you can sustain your artistic work in the long run. What funding opportunities do exist in Berlin and on the federal and European levels for more established artists? What nationwide festivals, showcase formats and other opportunities might allow you to present your work in and beyond Berlin? What networks, collaborations and partnerships are needed to gradually establish yourself and your work? In addition to those questions, we will discuss ways to navigate the everyday artistic lives with resilience and how secondary sources of income might provide you with financial security and enable you to meet Visa requirements.
