More about Work to Ride: Founded in 1994, Work to Ride (WTR) is a 501 c3, nonprofit community-based prevention program that aids under-resourced youth through constructive activities centered on horsemanship, equine sports and education.
The program is housed at Chamounix Equestrian Center, located in West Fairmount Park, Philadelphia. This setting provides a unique opportunity to bring urban youth in contact with animals and nature.
How it works: Once accepted into the program, participants begin in the “Sunday Program”, where they attend for 3 hours weekly all year round. Here they learn the fundamentals of horsemanship and riding. Riders later graduate to the “Saturday Program” where their weekly time commitment is gradually increased and academic tutoring is provided. Playing polo and other off the farm experiences begin. WTR is designed as a long term program, supporting participants through middle, high school, and the college admissions process.
