About this Event
From political billboards to illuminated projections, artists like Jenny Holzer have revolutionized the way words can shape our perception of art. But how did language become such a powerful medium in contemporary art? And how can text in art reflect society's most pressing issues? It's time to take a deep dive into the creative minds that use words as the ultimate artistic tool to challenge, inspire, and provoke.
Join New York Adventure Club as we explore the works of Jenny Holzer and other groundbreaking contemporary artists who have made language their primary medium, from public art installations to thought-provoking sculptures and paintings.
Led by Sylvia Laudien-Meo — art historian, museum educator, and NYC tour guide — this virtual journey into contemporary language-based art will include:
- A look at Jenny Holzer’s recent Guggenheim Museum exhibition and her use of language to address political and social issues
- Mid-20th century street artists like Jean Michel Basquiat and Lady Pink, who turned graffiti into Fine Art
- James Rosenquist’s transformation of commercial billboards into Pop Art
- Roy Lichtenstein’s iconic speech bubbles that bridge graphic novels and contemporary culture
- Barbara Kruger’s bold, socio-critical text-based art
- An exploration of Robert Indiana’s famous "LOVE" sculpture and other word-based works
- Lawrence Weiner’s conceptual site-specific language installations
- Neon art by Glen Ligon and Bruce Nauman that merges light and language
Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with Sylvia — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged!
