Wooli / 無理 / 우리 is an avant-garde folk duo formed by Taiwanese pipa player Fan-Qi Wu and Norwegian drummer Michael Lee Sørenmo. Since their debut in Oslo in April 2024, the duo has performed across Europe at festivals such as Aarhus Jazz Festival, Vestafor Festival, Babel Sound Festival, and (s)Nodi Festival. Their first album is currently in development and is scheduled for release in 2026.
Wooli draws inspiration from East Asian traditional and folk music and the expressive freedom of free jazz. At the heart of the project is a desire to reinterpret and transform cultural heritage, engaging with tradition not as a fixed form but as a living, evolving force. Their music is shaped through improvisation, real-time dialogue, and a shared curiosity for sound. Often described as ""a new invention,"" Wooli’s work challenges genre boundaries and offers a fresh sonic language—at once rooted and radically new.

Mit ihrer ersten EP, die im Januar erschienen ist, stellt sich GROUNDING, das neue Projekt des Saxophonisten Fabian Deschler vor – ein Quartett, das den Dialog zwischen Konkretem und Abstraktem auf innovative und zugängliche Weise gestaltet.
Die Band bewegt sich in einem Spannungsfeld zwischen zeitgenössischem und avantgardistischem Jazz. Prägnante Melodien entwickeln sich zu experimentellen Klängen, von energisch roh bis ruhig und introspektiv. Dabei bleiben die Musiker stets geerdet, was nicht nur als Hommage an ihren Namen, sondern als Grundsatz ihrer musikalischen Identität verstanden werden kann.
GROUNDING vereint vier aufstrebende Musiker aus Deutschland und Schweden: Fabian Deschler (Altsaxophon), Daniel Sauer (Tenorsaxophon), Olle Lannér Risenfors (Kontrabass) und Malte Wiest (Schlagzeug). Trotz, oder gerade wegen ihrer internationalen Wurzeln haben sie eine unverkennbare kollektive Klangsprache entwickelt, die den Hörer in unerwartete musikalische Welten führt.
Im Zentrum der Band steht das Wechselspiel zwischen den beiden Saxophonen, die sich kontrapunktisch ergänzen, miteinander harmonieren oder sich kontrastieren. Die Abwesenheit eines Harmonieinstruments öffnet dabei den Raum für eine intensive Interaktion, sowohl zwischen den Musikern als auch zwischen Struktur und Freiheit. Die Kompositionen spiegeln diese dualistische Herangehensweise ebenso wider: Ein Stück wie Rotation zeigt mit seinem rockartigen Drive, wie sich klare Formen und spontane Kreativität gegenseitig befruchten. Meditation hingegen nimmt den Hörer mit auf eine Reise, die sich von minimalistischen Ostinati hin zu freien, abstrahierten Klanglandschaften entfaltet. Mit The Tunnel erreicht die Band schließlich den Höhepunkt ihrer avantgardistischen Seite: ein intensives Spiel mit Klangfarben, Dynamik und expressiver Energie. Jedes Stück auf der EP ist dabei ein eigener Mikrokosmos, der die verschiedenen Facetten von GROUNDING offenbart.
Doch GROUNDING ist weit mehr als ein reines Studio-Projekt. Ihre Konzerte leben von einer unermüdlichen Experimentierfreude und einer musikalischen Wachheit, die jede Performance zu einem einmaligen Erlebnis machen. With their first EP, released in January, GROUNDING introduces itself, the new project of saxophonist Fabian Deschler – a quartet that explores the dialogue between the concrete and the abstract in an innovative and accessible way.
The band operates in a field of tension between contemporary and avant-garde jazz. Concise melodies evolve into experimental sounds, ranging from energetically raw to calm and introspective. The musicians always remain grounded, which can be understood not only as a homage to their name, but as a tenet of their musical identity.
GROUNDING unites four up-and-coming musicians from Germany and Sweden: Fabian Deschler (alto saxophone), Daniel Sauer (tenor saxophone), Olle Lannér Risenfors (double bass), and Malte Wiest (drums). Despite, or perhaps because of, their international roots, they have developed a distinctive collective sound language that leads the listener into unexpected musical worlds.
At the heart of the band is the interplay between the two Saxophones complement each other contrapuntally, harmonize, or contrast. The absence of a harmony instrument opens up space for intense interaction, both between the musicians and between structure and freedom. The compositions reflect this dualistic approach as well: A piece like "Rotation," with its rock-like drive, demonstrates how clear forms and spontaneous creativity mutually enrich each other. Meditation, on the other hand, takes the listener on a journey that unfolds from minimalist ostinatos to free, abstracted soundscapes. With "The Tunnel," the band finally reaches the climax of their avant-garde side: an intense play with timbres, dynamics, and expressive energy. Each piece on the EP is a distinct microcosm that reveals the various facets of GROUNDING.
But GROUNDING is far more than just a studio project. Their concerts thrive on a tireless spirit of experimentation and a musical alertness that make each performance a unique experience.
