About the Instructor: Varcoe Woodcraft
Amyas Varcoe grew up in rural Essex learning to make things in his father's workshop. He creates across a number of mediums, but is always in awe of the ancient and open process of wood. Pursuing the primal, practical, and beautiful, he explores the mythology we learn and create to connect with past and future generations.

In this workshop we will learn how to take a piece of wood and, with simple hand tools, create something lasting, unique and beautiful. The primary focus will be on making wooden spoons, but the skills we learn can be used to make just about anything. The workshop is open to everyone, from absolute beginner to experienced craftsperson, and there will be hands-on guidance for every step of the process. All tools and materials are provided, as is protective equipment.
The spoons we will make in this workshop are universal objects, used by humans for millennia. They have no moving parts, need no operating manual and can be any shape or size. Wood carving is one of the quickest ways to have something in your hand that you made yourself, and there's such a lot of untapped self-esteem and confidence that comes from making.
Fashioning things with our hands is a skill that has been rather forgotten in our digital age, but with nothing more elaborate than a knife and a piece of wood it is possible to focus, create, and meditate at the same time. It's an ancient, open process, available to everyone, and what we hope is that the time we spend together shows that anyone can be a genuine maker.
By the end of the workshop you will be able to hold and admire something that you made, something that didn't exist before. If you can then take it home and use it do something as primal as feeding yourself then that is a precious thing indeed.
