HISTORYWoodchester Mansion, near Nailsworth in Gloucestershire, was begun in 1857 for wealthy Catholic MP William Leigh. Designed by architect Benjamin Bucknall, it was meant to be a grand Gothic Revival mansion inspired by medieval cathedrals.
In 1873, construction suddenly stopped, most likely due to financial problems after Leigh’s death. Builders walked away, leaving the mansion completely unfinished.
Because it was never completed:
Rooms were never finished
Staircases lead nowhere
Doors open onto drops
No one ever lived in the building.
Left abandoned for decades, its isolation and eerie layout helped create its reputation as one of the UK’s most haunted buildings, with reports of footsteps, voices, shadows, and cold spots.
Today, Woodchester Mansion is a Grade I listed building, cared for by a trust, home to protected bats, and a popular site for paranormal investigations and tours.
