About the Women's History Month Concert
Through a rich and diverse repertoire featuring songs in Spanish, English, French, Portuguese, Ladino and more, Susana Behar will honor iconic female singers and composers from around the world. Her performance blends timeless classics with contemporary pieces, celebrating the strength, creativity, and resilience of women across generations and cultures.
This event will take place on Sunday, March 29, 2026, at the Deering Estate Visitor Center Theater, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Check-in will begin at 6:45 p.m. Tickets are $20 per person.
About the Artists
Susana Behar is a Miami-based singer specializing in Sephardic music and the Cuban and South American folk traditions of her upbringing. Passionate about the dynamic nature of traditional music and its connection to history and storytelling, she has performed across North and South America, Israel, and Japan. Her work has been featured in films, radio programs, and collaborative performances, including at the Kennedy Center’s first celebration of Jewish American Heritage Month. A recipient of the Florida Individual Artist Fellowship Award, she has served as Artist-in-Residence at HistoryMiami Museum, and she is currently an Artist-in-Residence and Programming Partner at Deering Estate. Behar has recorded three albums: La Galana i la Mar (2009), At The Crossroads, Live (2016), and TAPIZ (2019).
Michel Gonzalez is a Miami-based guitarist, composer, arranger, and educator. Born in Venezuela and raised in Spain, he studied classical and jazz guitar before earning a degree in Professional Music from Berklee College of Music, graduating Magna Cum Laude. He has trained with renowned musicians such as Pat Metheny and Barry Harris and was nominated for a Latin Grammy in 2013 for his work on Para ser un Sol by Jesus Hidalgo.
Michael Font is a Cuban percussionist who graduated from the National School of Music in Havana in 1993. He has performed with artists such as Oscar De León and Pitbull and contributed to over ten recordings, collaborating with musicians from Venezuela and Cuba, including Tony Sciortino, Elvita Delgado, and Havana Swing.
Magela Herrera is a Cuban-born flutist, vocalist, composer, and recording artist whose music blends Afro-Cuban traditions, classical training, and jazz influences. Educated at the Conservatory of Music in Havana and the Norwegian Academy of Music, she has performed with international artists such as Chucho Valdés, Hernán López-Nussa, and the Oslo Chamber Orchestra. Lauded for her distinctive sound, she has been described by the Latin Jazz Network as “a bonafide star who seems completely made of music.” Herrera is regarded as one of today’s most exciting female instrumentalists.
Elvis Martinez is a Venezuelan bassist, composer, and arranger specializing in experimental music. He studied at the Jose Luis Paz Conservatory and was a member of the Maracaibo Symphony Orchestra for 25 years. He has collaborated extensively with Huascar Barradas and Alexis Cardenas as a producer and arranger, touring internationally. His work on Miguel Siso’s Identidad contributed to its Latin Grammy win in the Instrumental category. A dedicated educator, he taught double bass at the Jose Luis Paz Conservatory for 18 years. Martinez remains active in various ensembles, blending Venezuelan music, jazz, and other genres.
About the Artist-in-Residence Program
The Deering Estate is proud to house 17 brilliant Artists-in-Residence for the 2026 season. Each artist interprets the historical, architectural, intellectual, archeological, and natural elements of the Deering Estate in their own artistic practice, while pursuing innovative projects, studio work, connecting with other artists, and engaging the public.
Each artist has a unique artistic practice, including but not limited to painting, sculpture, photography, cinematography, performance arts and the literary arts.
About the Deering Estate
Deering Estate, located at 16701 SW 72 Ave. in Miami, is a 21st Century house museum, cultural and ecological field station, and a national landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places, owned by the State of Florida and managed by Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department. Deering Estate is designated as one of seven Miami-Dade County “Heritage Parks” which have a vital role in our community’s history, environment and in providing recreational and cultural experiences.
