About this Event

This unique event brings together pioneering women's health experts from fields such as:

  • Reproductive and maternal health in vulnerable communities in Myanmar
  • Menopause and gynaecology in Liverpool
  • Breast cancer screening engagement and awareness in low-income communities
  • Gender and disability inclusion in mental health services and neglected tropical diseases in Africa and South Asia

Meet our incredible panel below!


Dr Kyu Kyu Than

Researcher, scientist, teacher and co-principal investigator for the Burnet Institute Myanmar, whose mission is to achieve better health for vulnerable communities. She holds a double masters in tropical medicine and sexual and reproductive health and works on policy analysis in sexual, reproductive and maternal health. She has expertise in designing, managing, organising and conducting research (multi-country studies). Kyu Kyu has worked as a consultant for various organisations including the World Bank, UNICEF, Save the Children, the Red Cross and the 3MDG fund. She is dedicated to reducing health inequities for women, men, children and adolescents across the world.


Charlotte Hemingway

PDRA in Department of International Public Health at LSTM specialising in participatory action research to improve access to and uptake of preventative medicine. Charlotte’s current research activities focus on exploring the complexities and impact of digital and creative health promotion for cancer screening and infectious disease outbreaks and within this capacity she has done some fantastic work around increasing engagement with breast cancer screenings in low-income communities.


Kathie Cooke

Gynaecology consultant nurse, BMS Registered Menopause Specialist and founder of the only Liverpool-based menopause clinic. She is a Registered General Nurse, Ba Hons Specialist Practitioner, MSc Clinical Nursing and Independent Prescriber. She also holds over 40 years of experience in all aspects of women's health.


Laura Dean

Laura is a public health specialist with over 15 years of experience of research, capacity strengthening, and partnerships for community led-development and health systems strengthening in Africa and Asia. Laura’s training is in the social sciences and her research utilises qualitative, narrative, and participatory research methodologies to support the strengthening of people-centred health systems for the management of communicable and non-communicable disease, disability inclusion and the integration of mental health services. She has led multiple multi-partner research programmes, developing long standing research collaborations across fragile and conflict affected States within West and Central Africa and South Asia. Drawing on intersectionality and gender theory, all of the research that she leads engages with marginalised populations and people with lived experience of communicable and non-communicable disease including mental health conditions and disability to ensure their needs, values and priorities are recognised within health systems reform and community action. Laura is currently a Reader in Social Science and Global Health at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and leads the Mental Health, Inclusion, NTDs and Disability (MIND) research group.


Beth Hollihead (CHAIR)

Senior Programme Manager leading the ADAPT programme management team based in the department of International Public Health of LSTM. The team manages a portfolio of transdisciplinary research programmes and consortia, working with partners in Africa, Asia and South America. Current portfolio includes research on gender and equity in AMR, urban health and climate change, and diagnostics for Tuberculosis.
