Hosted by the Claire Smith Center for Sports Media at Klein College, the symposium commemorates the 40th anniversary of a pivotal moment in sports media history—when Claire Smith, the first woman to cover Major League Baseball on a full-time basis, was barred from the clubhouse during the 1984 NLCS, sparking a change that opened doors for women in the industry. Claire Smith, now founding executive director and namesake of the Claire Smith Center, became recognized as a legendary journalist and sportswriter and continues to pave the way for the future of journalism.
The event will feature CLAIRE Talks, where attendees will hear from influential voices like Doris Burke, the first woman to call an NBA Championship Final, and Marsha Cooke, vice president & executive producer for ESPN Films and 30 for 30 ESPN.
