About this Event
Now You see Us: Women Artists in Britain 1520 - 1920 celebrates the women that challenged society’s expectations through making careers as artists and taking part in public exhibitions. The exhibition includes works by artists spanning from the Tudor Period to the First World War, including Mary Beale, Angelica Kauffman, Elizabeth Butler and Laura Knight. We will investigate the ways in which these artists overcame the gender inequality of their period by advocating for equal access to art training and academy membership, as well as by daring to paint subjects that were usually preserved for their male counterparts: battle scenes, the nude, and history paintings. The exhibition brings together over 150 works by the female artists that changed the course of Art History and paved the way for future generations of women to be a part of it.
The lecture will prepare you for the exhibition so that you can make the most of your time in the gallery and gain the greatest insight into the works. Please join us for lunch afterwards at Osteria Dell'Angolo.
