A new tool to understand neighborhood air pollution
Come be the first to see a new neighborhood mapping tool that’ll give you block-by-block insights on air pollution in our neighborhood.
Air pollution is hyperlocal: it can vary up to 8 times within a single block. Hyperlocal air monitoring helps us really understand the sources and impacts of emissions. Our partners at Spheros Environmental are building a public data portal that will bring together multiple datasets to tell the story of our neighborhood’s air through maps and data.
- Help design the public data portal. You'll be the very first to see the draft version: tell us what neighborhood history, viewpoints, and datasets we should incorporate.
- See what we learned over eighteen months of air monitoring. The map will incorporate data from our West Oakland Air Quality (WOAQ) monitoring network. Come learn how diesel particulate matter concentrations have changed over the past few years, and see data on metals that haven't been measured in West Oakland before.
- Learn how West Oakland’s air is changing, and where we go from here. We’ve made enormous progress towards cleaner air: diesel particulate matter (DPM) emissions are down across the neighborhood. How could new polluters like Eagle Rock impact our progress? How can we reduce pollution from the Port, the neighborhood’s biggest polluter?
