Join renowned forester Phil Benjamin and Wildlands Trust hike leaders Rob MacDonald and Ryley Newton for a winter trees hike at Tucker Preserve, within the Indian Head River Trail (IHRT). We will discuss winter forest ecology, how to identify trees in the winter, and the forest history of the area while admiring the sights and sounds of the IHRT. Phil will share his knowledge on the Tucker Preserve, dating back to the early 1900s and including his work providing extensive forest management in the mid to late 80s. Parking:
Meet at Luddam's Ford Park (Pembroke side), 418 Elm St, Pembroke, MA 02359. Parking is available on-site. Overflow parking is available on the Hanover side.
From Route 3: Take Exit 27 (old Exit 12). Merge onto Route 139 West toward Hanover. In 2.1 miles, turn right onto Washington Street. Continue onto MA-139 W/MA-53 N/Columbia Rd. Turn left onto Broadway. Turn left onto Elm Street.
Drive approx. 0.7 miles to Luddam’s Ford Park (Pembroke) on right (past the bridge). The preserve entrance is visible from the parking lot.
What to Wear & Bring:
Winter trail conditions may require traction devices and/or trekking poles for stability
Sturdy, closed-toed shoes
Weather-appropriate clothing for outdoor activities

Hiking 2-3 miles at a mile per half-hour pace
Frequent stops for discussion and exploration
Traversing rooted and occasionally steep terrain
Wildlands Trust volunteers to guide you!
