What is Forró?
Forró is a music style and couple dance that originated in northeast Brazil, with its beginnings traced back to the 19th century.
Forró music style is traditionally played on just three instruments: accordion, triangle, and zabumba (a type of drum that originated from Bantu peoples in Africa).
The dance is based on two simple steps that can be danced to both slow and fast melodies, and it can vary depending on the several existing forró music styles.
Forró was created for people to enjoy themselves at dance parties, so it’s joyful, vivid, and easy to learn. However, there are many increasingly advanced steps that incorporate elements from other dances styles, such as tango and samba, making forró a stimulating and interesting dance to learn as you progress. Still, the simplicity of the beginner and intermediate movements allows everyone to join the parties, which are still held in a very open and welcoming atmosphere.
Nowadays, forró dance has a huge community around the world. Besides Brazil, you can find and dance it all across Europe, especially in Portugal and Germany, where you can find communities in every major city. Here in Poland, people are dancing forró mainly in Kraków, Poznan, and Warsaw, where workshops with renowned teachers and parties with bands and DJs are often organized.
