As the city shuts down on December 25th, the Museum at Eldridge Street on Manhattan's historic Lower East Side comes to life for an afternoon of soulful and spirited klezmer music that is sure to engage the whole family!

Every year, the Museum is excited to host our annual winter concert, bringing together folks of all ages to celebrate the holiday season in the most beautiful interior in New York City. This year, we are thrilled to welcome back klezmer artist and scholar Yale Strom and his band, Hot Pstromi, who will mix classic Yiddish songs and klezmer melodies with original compositions. You will also hear traditional songs and tunes Yale Strom found during his years of ethnographic field research in Eastern Europe.

The number 18 is significant in Jewish numerology, meaning life, and this concert comes 18 years after Yale Strom led in October of 2007, an unprecedented gathering of over 100 klezmer musicians on the steps of the Eldridge Street Synagogue. Two months later, our 20-year restoration was finally complete, and this historical testament to Jewish life became the Museum at Eldridge Street. Join Yale Strom & Hot Pstromi in the place where it all began to celebrate this beautiful milestone together.

Musicians: Yale Strom (violin), Elizabeth Schwartz (vocals), Jasper Dutz (reeds), Ben Rosenblum (accordion), Brian Glassman (contrabass), David Licht (percussion)

About Yale Strom & Hot Pstromi:

Yale Strom is one of the world's leading ethnographer-artists of klezmer and Romani music and history. With his master’s in Yiddish studies, Strom did extensive ethnographic research in Eastern Europe on klezmer music and culture. Since his first trip to the former East Bloc, his findings were instrumental in forming the repertoire of his klezmer band, Hot Pstromi, directing 10 award-winning documentary films (including The Last Klezmer, short-listed for an Oscar nomination), writing 15 books, writing 2 award winning audio dramas, recording 20 CDs, and having multiple photo exhibitions in North America and in Europe. Strom's latest documentary film, Recordially Yours, Lou Curtiss (2023), is about the audiophile/ethnomusicologist Lou Curtiss who lived and worked in San Diego. Currently, Strom is developing a musical about the lives of Marc and Bella Chagall, and his first historical novel The Autobiography of the Offenbacher will be published in the fall of 2025.

Strom was artist-in-residence from 2006–2020 at the Jewish Studies Program at San Diego State University, a position created for him. He currently teaches at the University’s School of Music and Dance. Prior to this, he taught at New York University.
