The Windrush Generation is often remembered in connection with the Windrush Scandal, yet their story is far richer and deeper than that moment in time. It is a legacy woven from strength, belonging, and the blending of cultures — a legacy that deserves to be honoured and celebrated.
This talk offers a thoughtful, balanced reflection on both the challenges and the joys of this shared journey. It explores the convergence of nations, each bringing their own traditions, cultures, rhythms, and nuances, while learning to navigate a new world — for both the newcomers and the hosts, each adjusting to an uncharted landscape, with the hope of shaping it into a colourful, tolerant community grounded in shared values and experiences.
Patricia Smith works for the City of London Corporation and is a member of the Windrush Generation. She arrived in the UK in 1972 and was impacted by the Windrush scandal in 1984. Drawing on her own experience, she has supported the community in navigating the Windrush Schemes since 2023 through clinics delivered in partnership with the New Generation Church in Nottingham.
She holds a BA (Hons) in Information Systems and Social Sciences, is a qualified IT Consultant and Project Manager, a trained Complementary Therapist and Mental Health First Aider, and currently provides Executive Business Support within the Community Safety Team at the Guildhall.
Patricia is also an artist, author, and poet.
There will also be a free exhibition in the library featuring Windrush portraits by Patricia Smith.
