About this Event
Wilderness Union, Toronto's outdoor adventure crew, is hosting a day of free events across the city to celebrate the launch of our new free, . Join us for and learn why adventure is closer than you think.
Fire is one of the oldest skills humans carry, and one of the most useful to know if you spend any real time outside. Join Wilderness Union guide Kyle for a one-hour, hands-on introduction to the fundamentals of building a fire in the field, hosted in-store at Fjällräven Toronto.
The session opens with a live hand-drill demonstration to show how friction creates an ember, then shifts into the practical skills you'll actually use: how ignition really works, why tinder preparation makes or breaks a fire, and how to get reliable sparks out of a ferrocerium rod.
You'll learn:
- The fire triangle and why most fires fail before they start
- Tinder, kindling, and fuel hierarchy, and how to source materials in Ontario
- How to process and pack reliable, spark-catching tinder bundles
- Proper grip, striker angle, and spark control with a ferro rod
- Common mistakes and the small adjustments that fix them
The class wraps with a hands-on segment where you'll get to try igniting jute tinder with a ferro rod under guidance, plus open Q&A.
No prior experience required. Suitable for anyone curious about fire-building, from total beginners to campers looking to sharpen their technique.
