Hands-on experience immersed in Japanese botanical artform of kusamono | US National Arboretum | June 21, 1 PM - 2 PM | 2400 R Street NE
About this Event

Join esteemed kusamono artist Young Choe — who teaches the art of kusamono worldwide and has exhibited her work at the National Bonsai & Penjing Museum, among others — for a hands-on experience immersed in this Japanese botanical artform. Through a lecture and demonstration, learn characteristic kusamono styles, methods for creation, display techniques, and care. Then, create your own kusamono to take home and enjoy. Container, soil, plants, moss, and tools will be provided.

Kusamono is the Japanese art of creating small, naturalistic plant compositions that celebrate the beauty of grasses, wildflowers and other seasonal plants. The Japanese word kusamono, is comprised of two characters meaning “grass” and “thing”, referring to humble wild plants. Often displayed alongside bonsai as an accent, kusamono stands on its own as a complete expression, emphasizing simplicity, seasonality, and a sense of place.
