About this Event
Raised in a family of loggers committed to sustainable stewardship, Simard has firsthand experience of watching timber companies wreak havoc on the forests of British Columbia. Left vulnerable to wildfires and drought, the delicate biodiversity they support has been thrown into jeopardy.
When The Forest Breathes is a gentle uncovering of the deep-rooted cycles of renewal that sustain our forests and protect our ecosystems, an elegy to the finely honed cycles of birth, growth, death and rebirth that protect our natural world. It is a tender exploration of holistic and regenerative forestry, and the practices of local indigenous communities — whose expertise have been largely ignored.
Weaving together scientific discoveries and luminous storytelling, Simard’s book is a call to rediscover our connection with the natural world, and to listen to our forests.
Dr. Suzanne Simard is the bestselling author of Finding the Mother Tree. She is a Professor of Forest Ecology at the University of British Columbia, where she leads The Mother Tree Project. She has earned a global reputation for pioneering research on tree connectivity and communication and its impact on the health and diversity of forests. Today her work is taken as scientific orthodoxy and has inspired countless researchers, writers, and filmmakers, including James Cameron on Avatar, Robert Macfarlane and Richard Powers, who based a character on Simard in his Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Overstory. She lives with her family in the mountains around Nelson, British Columbia.
