After a six year pause, Polly’s Paladar Supper Club is officially returning to Nevada City, marking the first time the chef driven dinner series has operated since July of 2019. The revival will take place at the historic National Exchange Hotel and represents a significant moment for the local food and culture community.
Originally active from late 2011 through July of 2019, Polly’s Paladar built a devoted following as an intimate supper club rooted in collaboration, creativity, and shared tables. Since its closing, guests have continued to ask when it would return. This upcoming weekend marks its long awaited revival.
The supper club is named for its founder’s grandmother, Polly, and draws inspiration from her ingenuity, forthrightness, and resilience as a single mother who made life work for her family in the face of real obstacles. The original supper club was founded in that same spirit of independence and determination, centered on building what was needed when it did not yet exist and inviting community into the process.
The opening residency features guest chef Jordan Grosser and a high–low menu that looks at American food without hierarchy. This approach traces back to a moment when practicality mattered more than performance, when midcentury mothers made choices based on time, money, and survival rather than romance. Convenience foods became a language of resourcefulness, particularly in middle class households across the Midwest and Plains, including places like Kansas where Polly raised her family and where ingenuity often mattered more than purity.
This menu treats those references with seriousness and play. Familiar forms appear in unfamiliar contexts. A sense of humor runs through the experience, but so does respect. The point is not shock or nostalgia, but recognition. What was once considered ordinary is reconsidered with care, intention, and clarity. Exact menu TBA soon.
Each seating is a multi course dining experience designed to unfold slowly and intentionally, with optional cocktail pairings, live music, and a communal atmosphere. Seats are limited, and the event marks a rare opportunity to experience the return of a long dormant but deeply remembered piece of Nevada City’s dining history.
