I came into my first leadership role from a job as an engineer, without any leadership training, and charged with growing the capabilities of a manufacturing department. As such, I embarked on educating myself, understanding the opportunities, and engaging in problem solving. In ignorance, I did not pay much attention to relationship development or engaging the team in continuous improvement efforts. What resulted was hard-fought wins with upgrading processes and creating a team who was resistant, resentful, and disengaged. My changes felt imposed on them, and their individual skills and experiences were not leveraged. Unconsciously, I created an environment of frustration and distrust. Fortunately I learned from this experience and found success in future, new leadership opportunities.
As leaders, one of our primary responsibilities is to create an environment where our team can thrive. Yet we commonly are promoted to leadership because we are successful contributors. These are different skills and acknowledging this enables success.
Why Attend? In this interactive workshop we talk about the mindset change that is required by a new leader, a focus on relationship building and service, and we discuss some tools and techniques that help us gain followership and create high-performing, inclusive teams.
