About this Event
This seemingly ordinary, large urban park in L. B. of Newham has a remarkable back story and connections with unusual characters. During the park walkabout we will explore these stories and learn how West Ham Park came into being as one of the earliest public parks established by the City of London Corporation150 years ago. The donor family still sit on the management committee and one of their members, landscape architect Catherine Bickmore, will be with us on the park walk.
The tour leader, Dominic Cole, is a distinguished chartered landscape architect having been awarded an OBE for services to landscape conservation, in addition to a Royal Horticultural Society Veitch Memorial medal for services to horticulture. He received the Landscape Institute’s Peter Youngman award for his work on the design of the Eden Project in Cornwall. He is president of the Historic Gardens Trust and was formerly Chair of the National Trust’s garden advisory panel.
Working as a consultant Dominic has advised extensively on historic parks and gardens including producing the Conservation Management Plan for West Ham Park and numerous master plans and visions for a diverse range of historic parks.
The meeting point for the walk is the Park Office in West Ham Park.
The tours are part of the events over 20/21July celebrating 150 years since the official opening of West Ham Park as the ’People’s park and gardens for ever’.
The 77 acre park includes a stunning ornamental garden, some interesting trees and a wildlife area.
Easy access to the park is available using public transport
