Walking in nature to improve our mental and physical wellbeing
About this Event

About the Initiative:

Wellness Walk Luton is an initiative to engage those from the Luton community, especially those from South Asian backgrounds, to improve our mental and physical well- being through exploring and connecting with the countryside around the town.

Spending time walking in nature is something that really helps to boost our mental and physical wellbeing. There is a strong relationship between feeling good, being healthy, and enjoying the splendour and beauty in nature. Walking with others also creates an opportunity to talk, share and hopefully develop new friendships as you stroll through the countryside.

Meeting Point:

Chiltern Academy, Luton Retail Park, Gipsy Lane, Luton LU1 3GF (Meet at school car park). Plenty of spaces at the car park.

About the Route:

Our walk will start at 9am and will be between 2.5-3 hours including comfort breaks. The trail begins at the beginning of the Harpenden Cycle route and we follow a path to Someries Castle.

Someries Castle lies just south of Luton, very close to Luton Airport. All that remains are ruins, but these give a good idea of the former building. Built in the 15th century, it demonstrates early use of brick and is protected by scheduled ancient monument status.

You will be walking over a mixture of paths some up hill and down hill as well as narrow woodland trails with breathtaking views covering approximately 4-5 miles.

*The route may change due to weather.

What to Wear:

During the winter months the weather can be very cold, wet and windy. It’s really important you wear appropriate footwear and clothes. The trails will likely be muddy and wet during this time of year so walking boots ideally waterproof will lead to a more enjoyable experience in bad weather.

Bring a good windproof coat. If the weather is bad, you will almost certainly get wet and you will need a coat that keeps the wind off, as the combination of the wind and being wet is what leads to you getting cold.

Bring a good pair of gloves and a hat to keep you warm. Wearing ideally walking socks or two pairs of socks can help reduce the chance of blisters. Please avoid wearing cotton or denim especially if the weather is wet.

Food & Drink:

It is important that you make sure that you bring adequate provisions with you. Eating the right sorts of foods will keep your energy up whilst you are exercising, whereas drinking enough fluid will help to keep you hydrated whilst you are walking.

Snacks that contain carbohydrates are vital for giving energy. Eating carbohydrate rich foods will allow you to maintain a good pace throughout the day and can help to prevent you from getting exhausted.

Still water is the best option for rehydration when you are out on a walk. Fizzy drinks are not recommended as they offer poor rehydration and the gas can cause bloating and cramps. Fruit juices can lead to sugar spikes and are not as rehydrating as water. Isotonic drinks and sports drinks can help to replenish vitamins and minerals, but may not hydrate as well as still water.

Medical advice:

If you have any concerns about your health in relation to taking part you should consult a GP.

We will follow the Government regulations and guidance on Covid-19. Please do not attend if you have any Covid-19 symptoms or have recently tested positive.
