About this Event
The course will benefit participants by:
- Increasing their understanding of the Arabic language and its various stages of learning.
- Exposing students to the fundamental concepts or the language including common types of sentences and the core morphological and grammatical constructs.
- Increasing students’ Arabic vocabulary to include common nouns,verbs, adjectives, pronouns and conjunctives.
- Applying the constructs introduced to both reading comprehension aswell as some application in speech.
- Exposing students’ to the wondrous nature of the Quran and Hadiththrough basic verses and ahadith.
Prerequisites
Students are expected to fulfill the following prerequisites to be eligible for the course:
- Firm commitment to attend punctually and regularly.
- Students should be able to read Arabic text comfortably.
Course objectives
- To gain appreciation of the overall structure of the Arabic Language and how it should be studied
- To understand basic sentence structures and their respective variations
- To grow your vocabulary by at least 300 words
- To speak about yourself and understand and respond to basicconversational questions.
- To gain a basic understanding of some Quranic text, aHadith and Duas
- To gain a good command of the core concepts in Arabic includingmorphology and grammar.
Knowledge outcomes
At the end of this course the student will have knowledge of:
- The overall structure of the Arabic language
- The different types of Arabic sentences, understanding both the grammar and application in text and speech
- Understanding of key morphological conjugations of nouns and verbs
- A vocabulary of approximately 300 words
- How to construct basic nominal and verbal sentences includingstatements of fact, description and questions.
Skill outcomes
At the end of this course the student should be able to:
- Recite from memory the key noun and verb conjugation patterns
- Use the vocabulary covered in text comprehension and conversation
- Read basic texts and identify the various grammatical andmorphological constructs even if meanings of some of the words areunknown.
- Will be able to move onto the Arabic Primer Part 2
Course organisation
Teaching and learning will take place mainly through 2 hour interactive lessons and board activities, discussion, question and answer sessions. Small group revision sessions will be provided on a weekly basis.
In addition to the classroom based sessions, it is expected that you will undertake three hours of independent study per week. This will include a range of independent learning activities and homework assignments.
The course will be delivered through 12 x 2 hour sessions and a further 1 hour revision session each work for students to catch up, clarify any issues and come together and support each other.

The course curriculum is broken up over 12 weeks based on the following schedule:
- Introduction to Arabic Language
- The anatomy of the nominal sentence
- Nominal sentence sub-structures
- Personal pronouns and Demonstrative Pronouns
- Asking questions
- Practical application of nominal sentences through conversation
- The anatomy of the verbal sentence
- Sentences in the past tense
- Sentences in the present & future tense
- Understanding orders and prohibitions
- Practical application of nominal and verbal sentences in reading and conversation
- Examination
Your instructor
I'm Zahed and I'll be your instructor for this course. I wrote this course (part of a 3 level series) over a decade ago and it has served 100s of student to date.
I have traditional islamic studies and arabic background. I received formal training in Islamic Studies (Dar Nizami & the Madyafa at Azhar) and hold a BA, MA in Mathematics and Computer Science from Pembroke College, University of Cambridge.
I have published academic papers on Computational Linguistics & AI applied to the Quran as part of my PhD studies (sponsored by Bayyinah Institute) and have been developing and teaching various courses on arabic and islamic studies as well how to live a God-centred life for almost 20 years. My work began in Luton where I ran Darul Ihsaan, a non-profit in Luton teaching arabic and then developed further where much of my work was delivered via Ebrahim College in London where I served as strategic advisor, instructor and course developer in a voluntary capacity.
