About this Event

Welcome Aboard|

Welcome Aboard|Open Gathering in a Canal Boat Living Room

Welcome Aboard invites you aboard a temporary living room space at Hale Wharf, London. This two-day open gathering will take place in a small-scale, appointment-based format.

Since her master’s studies, Yuanping Liu has been researching and practising around canals, boats, and the everyday lives of boat dwellers. After her student accommodation contract ended, she chose to move onto a boat.

In her podcast, Yuanping repeatedly reflects that what truly fascinates her is not simply “the boat” itself, but how space and people come into relation with one another. The mobility, openness, and uncertainty of the boat make it both a form of dwelling and a method of practice. She hopes to turn the boat into a public space: a site that people on shore can enter, and where strangers may encounter one another.

From this starting point, we initiated an event around mobility and migration. Bringing together works by a group of artist friends, we are opening the boat’s living room to the public for two days only, and warmly invite you to come aboard.

This event is curated by Jialu Shen and Hannah Liu, with Yuanping Liu as the artist on board. The project is initiated by Bouncing Around 东奔西走, with support from UCL Grand Challenges and Space Strategy, Tongji University.

Bouncing Around 东奔西走 is an interdisciplinary action research project supported by UCL, with members from urban studies, service design, and linguistics. The project focuses on Chinese migrants in London who are living under temporary visa conditions, and explores how they continue to navigate the uncertainties of visas, work, housing, and life choices while searching for possibilities of staying, leaving, or remaining temporarily in between.

To ensure a quiet and comfortable visiting experience, this event uses a timed-entry reservation system. Each one-hour slot is limited to 10 visitors. Please register for one time slot only.

Specially prepared refreshments will be available during the opening days.

Photography and Image Use Notice
Photography will take place during the event. Photographs may be used for research documentation, project communication, exhibition-related materials, and public dissemination. By booking a ticket / reserving a place, you acknowledge and agree to the photography and image use described above. If you have any questions or concerns about being photographed or about the use of images, or if you would prefer not to appear in publicly shared photographs, please contact the organisers in advance or speak to us on site.

Safety and Dress Code Notice
The event takes place near a waterside area. Although the main activity will take place on shore and within the open living room space, visitors should be aware that the site is close to water and may involve certain safety risks. Please pay attention to the surroundings and follow the guidance of the organisers on site. We recommend wearing comfortable, casual clothing and shoes suitable for walking. Please avoid high heels or clothing that may not be suitable for a waterside environment.
