For Mental Health Awareness Month we use the art of theater to push through tough conversations around mental wellness in our community. In partnership with playwright Michael Garcia, we tackle the issues that impact the mental well-being of our community through theatrical expression.
Experience select monologues from Garcia's stage play, Stuff Inside My Head, as well as new monologues written by Garcia, related to the theme of mental and emotional wellness in the Black community. You will hear poetry and personal testimonies from members of the community who have endured and transcended traumatic experiences. The audience will engage with performers and each other by discussing the emotions that each performance and testimonial evokes.
We will also hear from mental health professionals who will share both their experiences and resources related to the traumas that we as a community encounter and must navigate to achieve healing and wholeness.
Come as you are, of any background, prepared to have an evening of artful programming that is vulnerable and transformative in nature. Most suitable for ages 13+.
About Stuff Inside My Head
Stuff Inside My Head is a gripping story of the personal battle with mental health that even childhood friends keep from each other.
When three friends meet in an apartment in Harlem, the atmosphere quickly disintegrates
into a tension-filled cauldron of repressed anger.
Accusations, insults, and shocking revelations move the action forward – resentment and envy are present. Each character unveils truth with authentic and heart-felt exposition. Emotions are raw, and conflict is inevitable leaving anyone to wonder – are they really friends?
Stuff Inside My Head is a play written from the heart...
A play that is timely, authentic, and necessary – you won’t leave the way you came.
