About this Event
‘’Once upon a time, not far from here… along a deer track, deep, deep in the woods, there lived a Bramble Picker and he was, so they say, the happiest man alive…”
Our “Weaving the Wild Edge” session combines Wild Craft, Storytelling and Nature Connection.
Laura Sky reweaves for us, in Story, the world of the Bramble Picker, weaving his baskets, in the woods of Wild Edges beyond the market town.
The tale comes from a time when Woodland Dwellers, knew a use for every part of plant and tree, every part of an animal, when none of the treasured lives of the woods would be wasted and the web of life was still tightly woven.
Wood-craftsman, Daniel offers us some bramble picking and wild basket weaving of our own. He guides us in an exploration of Wild Craft as a way of connecting with nature and helping the process of Regeneration along the hedges at Bowden Pillars.
With Nature Connection invitations, there is space to meet some of the Other-than-Humans out on the Land and enjoy a sanctuary of time away from 21st century life.
Shape of the session:
We’ll walk down the drive together to gather in our meeting circle for introductions, some Nature Connection and to hear Laura’s enchanting telling of the Bramble Picker’s Tale.
After a short sharing about the tale, we’ll walk to meet the brambles nearby.
Daniel can then demonstrate how to harvest the hedgerow and prepare the brambles using some techniques from the Travelling People of Britain.
Then you can have a try at bramble picking and wild weaving too.
There is no pressure to create anything complete just an exploration of the plants as craft materials and the techniques involved.
We will discuss a few ways we may use Bramble-weaving for structures on the Land and the potential for follow up sessions with Wild Basket makers, if there is interest for the future.
Here there is also the Invitation to take some quiet time to just BE on the Land and find what speaks to you from the Wild Edges.
We will provide some spare water, gluten free snacks and hot water but please do bring your own, too, so we have enough to sustain us all.
More about our session leaders:
Laura Sky Salmon
Nature Storyteller for Bowden Pillars Future Project, Nature and HealthFacilitator
“Once tellers wove a tapestry of story through the wild beauty of our Lands, through branch and root and stone, and rushing water. As people and land were separated so the tapestry was torn.
As I explore our land, I find strands of story and reweave them in my own way, recalling the ancient lost wild and hoping for Regeneration...”
My background and training is in Storytelling as a Folk Art and for Education, as well as being a Forest School and Play-workLeader.
My Story Ways Sessions take participants on their own journey into story through the living world, so we can weave our stories of place in community.
