About this Event
The Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture invites you to explore the art of weaving at "Weaving Stories" on Saturday, March 22nd, from 1-3 pm.
In partnership with Intuit: The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art, The Jane Addams Hull-House Museum, and the Ukrainian Institute for Modern Art, the event will feature a live demonstration of various weaving techniques and provide the opportunity to examine different types of looms.
Participants will have a chance to create a sash or bookmark through hands-on experience. The Women’s Guild Folk Art Room will also be open, showcasing textiles that reflect traditional folk art practices, and offering a focused presentation on cultural narratives through textiles. Attendees will also get to explore our most recent exhibition, the beLONGING exhibition. Light refreshments will be available, and we look forward to a day of hands-on learning and creative exploration of weaving.
This event will be facilitated by Rebecca Riley-Vargas, a skilled artisan with a passion for fiber arts. Rebecca grew up dabbling in many different fiber arts, but weaving remains her favorite. In 2019, she opened Three Moons Fiberworks, home to one of the largest collections of looms for teaching and studio use in the Midwest. Located just a short drive from Chicago in Chesterton, Indiana, Three Moons Fiberworks offers lessons in weaving, spinning, fiber dyeing, felting, knitting, crochet, embroidery, and more.
This series is made possible with generous support from the Terra Foundation of American Art, Art Design Chicago, the Lithuanian Foundation, the Illinois Arts Council, the City of Chicago Department of Culture and Special Events through CityArts, and the members and private donors of the Balzekas Museum.
