Weave your own pikau kete - Back pack or kete - bag/basketLearn how to harvest and prepare the harakeke using traditional māori weaving tikanga - protocols and practices.
Before I harvest I say a karakia - intention to Tane Mahuta - Kaitiaki - Guardian of the forest, trees and birds and insects that live in the forest.
We soften the strips of harakeke to make whenu - weaving strips.
Then these are joined together with a whiri - plait.
Pikau kete are my favourite thing to weave. They look great and are always useful for carrying lunch or clothing to the beach or town. Preparing the harakeke first after we harvest will take 1 day.
Wear covered shoes (or gumboots)
Sunday we will weave our own pikau kete or whiri kete.
BYO lunch, tea, coffee, milk etc provided
$200 per person.
I have been teaching weaving since 2017 at KareNZ Kitz Weaving Studio and Art Gallery beside the river in Waitara Taranaki.
In between KareNZ Kitz and the river is a park/playground, walkway (30 mins to the beach) with Art installations and a carving studio next door run by Artists and teachers Rangi Bailey (rakau-wood) and Morgan Watson (pounamu - greenstone).
