About this Event
What do the years 1962, 1979, 1980, 1983, and 1996 have in common?
Each marks a moment when humanity came dangerously close, sometimes within seconds, to a nuclear catastrophe. Not because of intentional war, but due to miscalculations, technical failures, or split-second human decisions. These real, documented events remind us just how fragile global stability can be—and how narrowly we have avoided disaster.
Through powerful storytelling, firsthand accounts, and expert insight, this experience sheds light on the risks we’ve faced and the critical lessons we must carry forward.
Join us at the Peace Stage at The Rotary Xperience at EarthX, where voices for awareness, responsibility, and global cooperation come together. Hear stories nearly lost to history and discover how individual actions helped prevent the unimaginable.
Keynote Speaker:
Ira Helfand, MD — member of the International Steering Group of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), recipient of the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize. Dr. Helfand is also the immediate past president of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW), recipient of the 1985 Nobel Peace Prize, and co-founder and past president of Physicians for Social Responsibility, IPPNW’s U.S. affiliate.
