About this Event
Celebrate Drew Barrymore’s 48th birthday with We Really Like Her! co-hosts Danita and Emily and a screening of Penny Marshall’s final film, Riding in Cars with Boys.
Based on Beverly Donofrio’s memoir of the same name, Riding in Cars with Boys is a true showcase for the endlessly likeable Barrymore following her stellar supporting roles in films like Donnie Darko (2001) and Charlie’s Angels (2000). Taking place over 24 years, the film has the child-star-turned-superstar playing “Bev” at various stages of her life as she deals with the fallout of becoming pregnant with her son at age 15.
With supporting players like Brittany Murphy, Steve Zahn, Lorraine Bracco, Sara Gilbert and Rosie Perez and a soundtrack that includes everyone from The Supremes to The Eurythmics, Riding in Cars with Boys is, like Barrymore, a natural charmer that deserves much more respect than it got from audiences and critics in 2001. Even when Bev makes questionable decisions, or is being a “bad” mom, you feel for her because of how much sympathy Barrymore, director Penny Marshall and writer Morgan Upton Ward clearly have for the character and the real person she’s based on.
Riding in Cars with Boys is a perfect example of why it is important to have women telling women’s stories. What’s more, it’s a warm reminder of how natural Barrymore is not only as a pop culture presence (see: The Drew Barrymore Show, DREW Magazine), but also as a leading lady. - EMILY GAGNE & DANITA STEINBERG
