20th Anniversary Screening! This April, hit the breaks on your seasonal depression with a 20th anniversary screening of LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE hosted by We Really Like Her!
Jump back into that yellow Volkswagen van and follow the dysfunctional antics of a failed life coach (Greg Kinnear), unappreciated wife (Toni Collette), delightfully delinquent senior (Alan Arkin), suicidal brother-in-law (Steve Carrell), nihilistic teenage son (Dano), and aspiring beauty queen daughter (Abigail Breslin). Can this misfit family put their differences aside and make it to the Little Miss Sunshine pageant on time? And what exactly are Grandpa and little Olive cooking up for the talent show?
Co-directed by Valerie Faris and featuring an Oscar-winning screenplay, this road trip dramedy was one of the surprise hits of 2006 and with good reason. While it absolutely is quirky at times (insert Sufjan Stevens needle drop here), what makes it stand out from other textbook examples of early 2000s twee cinema is its honest-to-goodness earnestness. Quite simply, you can’t help but root for these people, especially Olive.
So whether you were an early fan, or rolled our eyes at its success, we urge you to give this bittersweet “super freak” another chance to win your heart.
