Exhibition Overview

Zabe is a Nigerian-British painter whose practice centres portraiture as a way of exploring identity, culture, and the complexities of being seen. Working primarily through figurative painting, her work reflects on visibility, memory, and the tension between how people are perceived and how they exist beyond those expectations.
This exhibition brings together a body of work developed over recent years, including both seen and unseen paintings, pieces that have been shown before alongside works being exhibited publicly for the first time.
We Aren't Who They Thought We Were explores themes of identity, diaspora, and cultural perception, reflecting on what it means to exist beyond expectation. It is also a tribute to Black artists who have felt unseen, and accidentally defied what they were meant to be.
This marks Zabe's first solo exhibition, with the works coming together for the first time as a complete body of work in an exhibition setting.
Across the space, the works sit in conversation with each other, creating a quiet but direct reflection on visibility, self-definition, and presence.
Visitors are invited to take their time with the work, move through it at their own pace, and engage with each piece individually.
