Description: South Russell Village Park offers a beautiful mix of field and forest habitats, with wide‑open views that make spring birding especially rewarding. By early June, the meadow is glowing with yellow buttercups, and the Bobolinks are back from South America and settling into their breeding territories. Their bright, bubbling songs (almost like a cheerful computer glitch drifting over the field) are one of the highlights of this walk.
This park hosts a thriving Bobolink population, giving us excellent chances to observe males displaying over the meadow and females moving quietly through the grasses. Last year’s group even spotted a few females taking to the air, offering rare views of their flight behavior.
We’ll also watch for other grassland and edge species such as Eastern Meadowlark, Savannah Sparrow, Eastern Bluebird, and American Goldfinch. A short woodland loop may add species like Rose‑breasted Grosbeak or Northern Flicker to round out the morning’s list.
